Suicide in Adolescents and Transition Age Youth

In 2017, suicide was the second leading cause of death for young people ages 15-24. Rates of suicide among youth continue to increase, making it essential for mental health clinicians and other professionals working with adolescents to understand the dynamics of suicide among young people. After providing a foundation on how widespread the problem is and the prevailing theories about the drivers of suicidal behaviors, this course will teach you about how to effectively screen potentially suicidal youth and ways you can intervene to lower their risk. Working with suicidal youth can be anxiety-provoking even for experienced clinicians. However, it is important to bear in mind that suicide is preventable. With knowledge of risk factors and warning signs, along with tools you can use to effectively mitigate risk, you may be the critical factor standing between life and death for a vulnerable, at risk teen.
