Developing Collaborative and Effective Interpersonal Relationships

Without essential “people skills,” a correctional manager’s efforts to become a leader will fail, and his or her entire career can be derailed. The ability to build and maintain effective relationships is an intangible, yet critical, element of professional success in any workplace. This is particularly true in the corrections field—a “people” business with a dual focus on inmates/clients and the staff and colleagues who drive an agency’s success. In this course, targeted toward supervisors and managers in jails, prisons, community corrections, and juvenile justice services, participants will learn to create and maintain effective professional relationships. You will learn about “emotional intelligence” and why empathy is the basis for trust and leadership. You will also learn to frame your role in your agency using the concept of social responsibility, which explains why success on the job means not focusing narrowly on your own job responsibilities but working collaboratively with others when necessary to achieve the best overall outcomes for your organization. Skills for building a strong professional network that keeps you informed and prepares you to further your agency’s success will be covered. These facets then come together in a discussion of the principles of internal and external collaboration. Finally, you will learn how to avoid the potential pitfalls inherent in today’s e-communication tools and to use them effectively so your colleagues and direct reports feel heard, connected, and appreciated and business gets done. The course material is based on content presented in Correctional Leadership Competencies for the 21st Century: Manager and Supervisor Levels, U.S. Department of Justice, National Institute of Corrections, 2006.
